So I'm listening to a song by Good Old War titled, "That's Some Dream" and i think its a really good song. particularity i really enjoy the first two lines of the song which go like this,
"There's a time in our lives we start again on writing our part
as the story goes on it's the rule that we remember our lines"
and the part about the "rule", has me contemplating about the genuineness of our daily actions. the lyrics then follow as;
"I know everyone would want me to say
that I'm not afraid to be alone
I'm gonna live I'm alright,
I'm gonna die it's alright, I'm okay"
and i wonder, if being alright and well is a rehearsal that we all feel we need to fulfill daily. everybody wants us NOT to be afraid and therefore we wont. are we forced to b fearless, because this is normal. and i bet you don't see the problem, and its difficult to. but see, to believe that normal is legitimate and existent has many future complications. seeing fearless as an ideal condition creates problems for our other understandings.
being white, males, straight are often though up of as being ideal conditions and historically regarded as normal. because of it, societies have discriminated and stigmatized those who appears abnormal. the problem however does not lie in the incorrect understanding of what normal is, but rather in the false understatement and normality exists. i understand, that my example may appear somewhat extreme, radical, and distant from racial prejudice and homophobia, but is it really? culture connects all our lives, and every subculture in society is in balance with all the others. every idea is a reflections of other ideas and understandings.
we are raised to remember our lines, we are preconditioned to believe certain ideas. in away, we are controlled by ideas, but these are essentially our own. and like anything cultural, they are fluid and capable of changing. and the is nothing wrong with remembering lines, it just depends what is is that we are being told by ourselves, to remember.
having society expect you to say your not afraid is troublesome. not because i believe its better to be afraid than it is to be fearless...but because we think that being fearless is ultimately and always better.
having society expect you to to be alright about being alive and be alright about having to die is troublesome. not because i think its better to be naive than it is to be "wise" or "realistic". but because we think that being realistic is natural, and the necessary step for human understanding.
their is nothing natural, their is nothing fixed about human nor about culture. we should not expect any fixed condition in our society or in ourselves. i think that once we being seeing how we can never be the same, how we can never truly get along with one another, then maybe we can stop fighting. so i guess, if we have to remember lines, lets remember that they will change.
and maybe i over examined the song. but hear it, its a great song.

it will be the wars you fight that will determine your legacy, but it will the battles that will determine your character, and in the End no matter what your legacy is, it will be your character that means the most
